It is NOT a good idea to watch a programme on a Sunday afternoon, about the top 12 most venomous creatures in Australia, two days after your son, who just happens to be spending three months in that particular country, post some photos of some huge, scary looking spiders in his flickr account and also tells you that he has had a close encounter with a tiger snakeunder some corragated iron he was moving…..
The programme featured some horrific spiders and some rather nasty snakes - one of which was - yes, you’ve guessed it, a TIGER SNAKE!!!!!
I was just getting over his departure and coming to terms with his going. Now of course I am very relaxed about the whole thing - NOT!

That would be so upsetting. Does saying “Try not to worry” help at all?

Hi Sue,
It’s so darned hard watching the kids leave the nest. When our oldest went to college we drove her completely across state and J sobbed all the way home. I think that was one of my longest drives ever.
When our youngest decided he wanted to go in the military we visited him in Texas for his basic training graduation. That was difficult enough but a couple of years later, after 9/11 when he was sent as an advance group to Pakistan then Afghanistan we all worried and prayed for the best.
He’s home today and out of harm’s way, for the most part.
So, I guess all I can say about your experiences lately is that they’re very shared, very real and very engendering.
Like my Dad says, “in spite of what we do they grow up anyways!”
Take care.
